Weighted Grade Calculator
Enter your grade and the weight of each category, such as homework, quizzes and exams. Your weighted grade updates as you type.
Enter each grade as a percentage. If you only have marks, such as 45 out of 50, divide and multiply by 100 first (45 ÷ 50 × 100 = 90).
How to use the weighted grade calculator
You need your grade in each category and how much each category counts. Your weighted grade appears on the right as you type.
Name each category
Type a name such as Homework, Quizzes, Midterm or Final exam. This is optional, but it helps you keep track.
Enter your grade
Write your grade in that category as a percentage, for example 90. Decimals like 87.5 also work.
Enter the weight
Write how much the category counts toward the course, for example 20. Use "+ Add category" if you need more rows.
Read your grade
See your weighted percentage, letter grade and total weight entered. The weight box turns green at exactly 100%.
How a weighted grade is calculated
Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight. Categories with a higher weight affect your final grade more.
Weighted grade = Sum of (grade × weight) ÷ Sum of weights
Example below: 18 + 8 + 22.5 + 34 = 82.5 points out of 100 weight, so your weighted grade is 82.5%, which is a B-.
| Category | Grade | Weight | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 90% | 20% | 18 |
| Quizzes | 80% | 10% | 8 |
| Midterm | 75% | 30% | 22.5 |
| Final exam | 85% | 40% | 34 |
| Total | 82.5% | 100% | 82.5 |
Tip: if you have not taken some exams yet, enter only the categories you have finished. The calculator shows your grade so far and tells you how much weight is still to come.
Frequently asked questions
What is a weighted grade?
A weighted grade is an average where some parts of the course count more than others. For example, a final exam worth 40% affects your grade much more than homework worth 10%.
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each grade by its weight, add all the results, and divide by the total weight. If the weights add up to 100, the sum of the points is already your final percentage. The calculator does this automatically.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
If the total is below 100%, the calculator shows your grade based on the weight entered so far and tells you how much is still to come. If the total is above 100%, it shows a warning so you can check your weights.
Where can I find the weights for my course?
Check your course syllabus or grading policy, or ask your teacher. Weights are usually listed as percentages for homework, quizzes, projects, midterms and the final exam.
When should I use the Grade Calculator or the Final Grade Calculator instead?
Use the Grade Calculator when every assignment simply counts by its marks. Use the Final Grade Calculator when you want to know what score you need on your final exam to reach a target grade.
