What you need for other grades
How to use the final grade calculator
You need three numbers: your current grade, the weight of the final exam, and the grade you want. The score you need appears on the right as you type.
Enter your current grade
Write your grade as a percentage before the final exam, for example 82. Not sure? Work it out with the Grade Calculator first.
Enter the final exam weight
Write how much the final counts toward the whole course, for example 30. Your syllabus or teacher can tell you this.
Choose the grade you want
Type a percentage or tap A, B, C or D to fill it in. Add the exam's total marks if you want to see marks needed.

How the final exam score is calculated
Your overall grade is your current grade, counted for the part of the course before the final, plus your final exam score, counted for its weight. The calculator reverses this to find the missing score.
Needed score = (Desired grade − Current grade × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight
Write the weight as a decimal, so 30% is 0.30.
Example: current grade 82%, final exam weight 30%, desired grade 85%. (85 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 27.6 ÷ 0.30 = 92%.
What the result labels mean
| Score needed | Label |
|---|---|
| 0% or less | Already secured |
| Up to 60% | Very achievable |
| 61% to 80% | Achievable |
| 81% to 90% | Challenging |
| 91% to 100% | Very hard |
| Above 100% | Not possible without extra credit |
Tip: the heavier the final exam, the more it can change your grade. A final worth 50% moves your result much more than one worth 20%.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?
Multiply your current grade by the share of the course already finished, subtract that from your desired grade, then divide by the final exam weight. The calculator does all of this for you automatically.
Where do I find my final exam weight?
Look in your course syllabus or grading policy, or ask your teacher. It is usually written as a percentage, such as 25% or 40%.
What does it mean if the score needed is above 100%?
It means your desired grade cannot be reached with a normal exam score. It is only possible if your teacher offers extra credit. You can also choose a lower target grade.
What if I do not know my current grade?
Use the Grade Calculator to add up your scores so far and get your current percentage. If your assignments have different weights, use the Weighted Grade Calculator instead.
Can I enter a letter grade instead of a percentage?
This calculator works with percentages. Convert your letter grade to a percentage first, for example B is about 83% and A is about 93%, or tap the A, B, C or D buttons for your target. Check your school's grading scale for exact values.
