Grade Calculator

Enter the score you got and the total marks for each quiz, assignment or exam. Your grade updates as you type.

Assignment (optional)Score earnedTotal marks

Every assignment counts by its total marks, so a 100-mark exam matters more than a 20-mark quiz. If your assignments have different percentage weights, use the Weighted Grade Calculator instead.

How to use the grade calculator

You only need the marks you scored and the total marks for each assignment. Your overall percentage and letter grade appear on the right as you type.

  1. Name your assignment

Type a name such as Quiz 1 or Midterm. This is optional, but it helps you keep track.

  2. Enter the score you earned

Write the marks you got, for example 45. Decimals like 17.5 also work.

  3. Enter the total marks

Write the full marks of that assignment, for example 50. Use "+ Add assignment" for more rows.

  4. Read your grade

See your percentage, letter grade, points and how much more you need for the next grade. Use "Reset" to start again.

How your grade is calculated

Add up all the marks you earned, add up all the total marks, and divide. Multiply by 100 to get your percentage, then match it to a letter grade.

Grade % = (Total marks earned ÷ Total marks possible) × 100

Example: Quiz 18/20, Midterm 72/100, Project 45/50, Final 85/100. Earned = 220, possible = 270. 220 ÷ 270 × 100 = 81.48%, which is a B-.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my grade?

Add up the marks you earned in all assignments, add up their total marks, divide the first number by the second, and multiply by 100. The calculator above does this for you automatically.

Which letter grade scale does this calculator use?

It uses a common scale where 90% is an A-, 80% is a B-, 70% is a C- and 60% is a D-, with plus and minus grades in between. Schools vary, so check your own grading policy if your official grade differs.

Can I enter extra credit?

Yes. The score you earned can be higher than the total marks, for example 22 out of 20. The extra marks raise your overall percentage.

My assignments have different weights. What should I do?

This calculator counts each assignment by its total marks. If your teacher gives fixed percentage weights, such as 30% for the final exam, use the Weighted Grade Calculator for an accurate result.

How do I find out what I need on my final exam?

Use the Final Grade Calculator. Enter your current grade, the weight of the final exam and the grade you want, and it shows the score you need.

Does this calculator save my information?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent anywhere. When you refresh or close the page, your entries are cleared.
