How GPA is calculated

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. Each grade has a point value. Multiply it by the course credit hours to get quality points, then divide the total quality points by the total credit hours.

GPA = Total quality points ÷ Total credit hours

Example: Math A (3 credits) = 12 points, English B (3 credits) = 9 points, Physics B+ (4 credits) = 13.2 points. Total = 34.2 points ÷ 10 credits = 3.42 GPA.

Frequently asked questions

What is a GPA?

GPA (Grade Point Average) is a number that shows your average academic performance. It turns your letter grades into points and averages them, giving more weight to courses with more credit hours.

How do I calculate my GPA?

Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add all those results together, and divide by your total credit hours. The calculator above does all of this for you automatically.

Which grading scale does this calculator use?

It uses the common 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades, where A+ and A both count as 4.0. Some universities use slightly different values, so check your institution's grading policy if your official GPA differs.

What is a good GPA?

A GPA of 3.0 or above is generally considered good, and 3.5 or above is very strong. Scholarships and graduate programs often ask for 3.0 to 3.5 or higher, but requirements vary by school.

How do I include my previous GPA?

Fill in the "Already have a GPA?" box with your current GPA and the credits you have completed. After you add this semester's courses, the calculator shows your new cumulative GPA.
